Watts Governer 80 Thermal Expansion Devices M2003
In addtion to supplying “funny photos”, I’m supplying photos for educational purposes.
We usually look for the expansion tank at the Water Heater. This one here is a watts governer 80. These can be located about anywhere, which is agrevating for the building inspector. I suspect I took this photo becuase of the firewall (garage) that has been penetrated.
Here is one of the Watts Governer 80’s that is built into the tiolet tank. This can be a problem if the homeowner replaces his flusher not knowing his expansion device is built in.
Here is one of the expansion tanks.
Here is a thermal expansion tank located away from the water heater.
Thermal Expansion DeviceHere is an expansion tank not mounted near the water heater. The water heater is on the other side of the house.Expansion Tank Away From Water Heater. This is an Amtrol ST-5. Their Installation Istructions says “…Install the THERM-X-TROL® on the city supply line to the water heater at a point between the water heater and backflow preventer, check valve or pressure reducing valve…” I found this on a basement finish in a newer home.

can I install a thermal expansion tank (upside) down above the hot water tank—-I would like to come off the tank at the T&P valve port with a T, putting the T&P out the side port and the expansion tank in-line with the T

That would be a question for the manufacturer of the expansion tank. I see them mounted sideways.
