If you look in the categories, at the bottom you see _IRC. I’m categrizing all of these by Chapter and Top level section in the code book. This way instructors teaching the IRC can find the photos easier.

The new code (change in the 2006 IRC) reads as follows.
Exception: The following products, materials and uses are
exempt from the above hazardous locations:…
…4. Glazing in Section R308.4, Item 6, in walls perpendicular to the plane of the door in a closed position, other than the wall toward which the door swings when opened, or where access through the door is to a closet or storage area 3 feet (914 mm) or less in depth. Glazing in these applications shall comply with Section R308.4, Item 7.4. I take it that the window to the right of the door below does not have to be tempered.

Here is a good one. This is a re-inspect on a bracing inspection. I ragged this builder big time on this one. I told him it would show up on the web one day.

Consider the following gate.
The code reads

Pool Barrirer Requirements
If we look at the 2006 International Residential Code Appendix G Section AG105.2.9 We have doors in the house that exit into the pool area. I will try to explain below why the code sounds so ridiculous.
More on Pool Door Alarms
The important factor is that adults can hear the alarm if they are sleeping or performing household activities such as vaccuming the house. Being that the alarm is this loud, the homeowner has a tendency to disable it. In the event there are toddlers in the house, we have to rely on the homeowner to turn the alarm back on. This is whyey the requirement is that “The alarm shall automatically reset under all conditions…The alarm system shall be equipped with a manual means, such as touch Pad or switch, to temporarily deactivate the alarm for a single opening. Deactivation shall last for not more than 15 seconds.”
If we don’t have the temporary deactivation that automatically resets, then the homeowner will remove the arlarm or battery.
The model I recommend shown in the ebay search above is nice being that is has the 7 second delay. This means if you come in from outside and the deactivation switch is inside you don’t have to hear it whe entering the house.

In addtion to supplying “funny photos”, I’m supplying photos for educational purposes.
We usually look for the expansion tank at the Water Heater. This one here is a watts governer 80. These can be located about anywhere, which is agrevating for the building inspector. I suspect I took this photo becuase of the firewall (garage) that has been penetrated.
Here is one of the Watts Governer 80’s that is built into the tiolet tank. This can be a problem if the homeowner replaces his flusher not knowing his expansion device is built in.
Here is one of the expansion tanks.
Here is a thermal expansion tank located away from the water heater.
Thermal Expansion DeviceHere is an expansion tank not mounted near the water heater. The water heater is on the other side of the house.Expansion Tank Away From Water Heater. This is an Amtrol ST-5. Their Installation Istructions says “…Install the THERM-X-TROL® on the city supply line to the water heater at a point between the water heater and backflow preventer, check valve or pressure reducing valve…” I found this on a basement finish in a newer home.

It was probably OK, but I couln’t see how “knotted” it was inside the top plate. The builder had his electrician change it. You can allways get them on Article 110.12 “…shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner.”

These 2x4s are at least 12 feet long. There is a kitchen above. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but they have some serious deflection. I was to scared to go under them for further insepction.
